The head of the station said that Harar number three 132 KV substation has increased capacity to accommodate customers who need power.
According to the head, Tewodros Tammen, the substation has two 132, two 66, four 33 and five 15 kV output lines.
He said that the distribution station receives power from Dredawa at 132 KV and is supplying power to Jigjiga, Deg Habur and Fiq distribution stations with 132 KV two output lines and 15 KV five output lines to the districts, rural kebeles and cities in the region.
The two output lines of 66 KV are providing power to the existing distribution station in Harar city and Haromaya, Deder, Kara Mile, Jalenko towns and areas in East Hararge zone, and 33 KV to Bedesa, Fidis, Harar city water service and various industries in and around the city. The official explained.
The official said that although the distribution station has the capacity to supply 80 megawatts of electricity with the three transformers, it is currently supplying only 48 megawatts.
Thus, the distribution station has an additional capacity of 32 megawatts that can handle future energy demands, the official said.
Mr. Tewodros pointed out that when the station started providing services, it had a capacity of no more than 51 megawatts. Thus, customers were forced to get electricity in shifts because they could not respond to the ever-growing demand for power in Harar city and the surrounding area.
However, the capacity enhancement works done at the substation a year ago have increased the load capacity by 56.9 percent from the previous level.
He said that this not only eliminated the electricity that was being provided in shifts, but also created additional capacity that could handle the future energy demand.
Ato Tewodros announced that the station has recently started work to provide additional power to Harar city with a 15 kV transmission line.
The head of the station also indicated that it is working in coordination with the regional and Eastern Hegerge electricity service to avoid power outages due to problems with the distribution lines coming out of the station.
Harar No. 3 distribution station has been in service since 1998.
