The government of the region announced that the number of cities and kebeles receiving electricity from the grid is increasing due to the construction of high power distribution stations and capacity improvement works in the Somali region.
According to the Deputy Head of the Regional Governor’s Office, Mr. Muhammad Yusuf Roble, the demand for electricity is increasing due to the growing demand for development in the region.
In the last five years, two new power distribution stations have been commissioned to meet the needs of the region, he said.
He said that due to the construction of new distribution stations in the region and capacity improvement works on the existing ones, towns and villages without electricity have started getting power from the grid.
As a result, in the last five years, more than 20 cities and more than 40 kebeles have benefited from electricity in the region, Mr. Mohammad pointed out.
According to Mr. Mohammed, the power distribution station constructions and capacity improvement works being carried out in the region are making a significant contribution in attracting investment and making the areas that are not suitable for living and working comfortable.
He also said that in view of the region’s population and skin size, it will require a lot of work to make all areas benefit from grid electricity.
With this, Mr. Mohammad mentioned that major cities and district centers are being given priority to get electricity from the grid, while areas far from the grid are being made to get power from solar energy and other alternatives.
In addition to the ones that are currently providing services, the official said that activities have started to build a high power transmission line and distribution stations to strengthen the eastern grid.
The construction of the project will create capacity for the expansion of high industries in the region and for farmers who are managed by irrigation to carry out their work using electricity.
He pointed out that the construction of the project will allow the region to have two more new power distribution stations and this will increase the number of power distribution stations in the region to seven.
Ato Muhammad mentioned that the state government is providing the necessary support for the infrastructure constructions that the institute will carry out in the region and confirmed that the support will continue to be strengthened.
