Environmental Clearance for Gurara 230 KV Power Transmission Line and Sub-Station Project
Gurara Project to Enhance Addis Ababa's Power Grid
The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Environmental Protection Authority has granted environmental clearance to Ethiopian Electric Power for the implementation of the Gurara 230 KV Power Transmission Line and Sub-Station Project in Addis Ababa, Yeka Sub-city, Woreda 1, subject to specific environmental conditions.
An updated Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been completed for the Gurara 230 kV Power Transmission Line and Substation Project in Ethiopia. This project, managed by Ethiopian Electric Power, aims to improve the reliability of electricity supply to Addis Ababa and surrounding areas by constructing a new transmission line and substation. The assessment addresses potential environmental and social impacts and outlines mitigation measures, following national and African Development Bank guidelines.

ADDIS ABABA POWER SUPPLY REINFORCEMENT PROJECT(Executive Summary)
The current project is part of the Addis Ababa Transmission and Distribution System Rehabilitation and Upgrading Project that covers Addis Ababa City Administration (AACA) and an approximate 50km radius area around the city, and it comprises four components that are described in the project description section. The main objective of the project is to rehabilitate and upgrade transmission and distribution system to supply stable power to grid of the city and to contribute to the improvement of industrial infrastructures and socioeconomic development.
This Project is aligned with Ethiopia’s National Electrification Program (NEP 2.0), which envisions to achieve near-universal electrification by 2030 and the Ethiopian Electric Power’s (EEP) Electricity Sector Development Strategy/Plan (2020/21 – 2030), which provides for priority investments in generation, transmission and interconnection as well as the distribution and network expansion over its 2020/21 – 2030 plan horizon. The International Development Association (World Bank) has agreed to finance this initiatives that are essential for robust preparation and timely implementation of the Project
activities.
