Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania have signed a groundbreaking tripartite agreement aimed at strengthening regional power interconnection and enabling the transmission of electricity from Ethiopia to Tanzania.
The agreement was finalized during a high-level meeting attended by representatives from all three countries.
Prior to the signing, the countries engaged in discussions focused on the commercial framework, administrative policies, and other logistical details required for the successful execution of the power-sharing project.
Merkneh Yigezu, Director of the Legal Division at Ethiopian Electric Power, expressed his appreciation for the hard work and commitment of the delegates, emphasizing that the agreement was more than just a business deal—it symbolized an important step in regional integration and collaboration.
Mr. Godfrey Kariuki, Strategic Manager at Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), highlighted the swift and efficient manner in which the consensus was achieved, pointing out how quickly the negotiations led to the signing of the agreement.
Renata Ndege, Deputy Managing Director for Planning, Research & Investment at TANESCO, emphasized the importance of the successful conclusion of the treaty and called for immediate steps to implement its provisions.
The agreement allows Ethiopia to transmit electricity to Tanzania via Kenya, taking advantage of existing regional infrastructure.
According to the document, a final, comprehensive agreement among the three nations is expected to be signed in early April. This will formalize Ethiopia’s commitment to supply 100 MW of electricity to Tanzania, generating estimated monthly revenue of over five million dollars for Ethiopia. The initiative marks a significant advancement in regional energy integration and economic development.
