Construction of the Koysha Hydroelectric Power Project has now surpassed 77 percent overall, according to Project Manager Engineer Mebratu Teshome.

Engineer Mebratu said that for the 201-meter-high dam, 6.4 million cubic meters of excavation work have been completed to date. Of the 7.72 million cubic meters of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) required, 6.27 million cubic meters – or 81.2 percent – have already been placed.

He noted that excavation work at the project, along with the first phase of civil concrete filling, has been fully completed. Electromechanical components are now being manufactured across multiple factories to keep the project on schedule.

Engineer Mebratu recalled that financing challenges, particularly foreign currency shortages, had previously slowed construction progress. He said the institution is now covering the project’s financial requirements through self-funding, which has significantly accelerated the pace of work.

According to the project manager, efforts are underway to complete the dam’s construction by the end of the current fiscal year.

The first turbine is expected to begin operational testing by October/November 2028, with the entire project targeted for full completion by May/June 2029.
