Works Underway to Meet Power Supply Demand for Industrial Park

Construction of the Weynanta 132 kV substation has surpassed 71 percent completion in civil works, according to the project’s Civil Works Coordinator.

Mr. Elias Mohammed stated that the substation is being developed to provide reliable electricity to the Yirgalem Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Park. He noted that although a power supply agreement for the industrial park was signed four years ago, construction was delayed at the time due to foreign currency shortages.

Following the completion of civil works for the switchyard, installation of transformers is now underway. Additional activities in progress include finishing control buildings and residential facilities, as well as constructing internal access roads.

Mr. Elias further indicated that all materials required for the electromechanical works have already been delivered to the site. Cable installation and control system works are scheduled to follow as the next phase. Preparatory work has also begun for the installation of 25 steel transmission towers needed to connect the substation to the Yirgalem No. 2 substation.

In parallel, the 132 kV transmission line that will supply power to the substation is being constructed under the supervision of Ethiopian Electric Power’s Construction Management unit.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bahtiyo Kumsa, Site Manager for the project at Sinohydro Company, noted that the substation will be equipped with two transformers, each with a capacity of 50 MVA. He added that while civil works are nearing completion, construction of internal roads has experienced minor delays due to seasonal rains.
