Construction of the Shigdan 230 kV substation has surpassed 65 percent overall completion, according to the Site 2 Manager of the Southern National Grid Expansion Project at Ethiopian Electric Power.
The site manager, Mr. Argaw Tadi, stated that civil works have reached 70 percent completion, while electromechanical works currently stand at 35 percent. He noted that the installation of five transformers and two shunt reactors has been completed, with oil-filling activities now underway.

Mr. Argaw further indicated that construction of operator residential buildings and control houses has been finalized. In parallel, work on internal access roads and gravel surfacing within the substation compound has commenced. The remaining electromechanical activities include busbar installation, control system works, and laying underground cables required for power transmission.
According to project specifications, the substation will be equipped with five transformers, each with a capacity of 400 MVA, and two shunt reactors. It will also feature one 132 kV and fifteen 33 kV outgoing feeder lines.
Mr. Teshale Tadesse, Electromechanical Works Supervisor, said that close monitoring and supervision are being carried out to ensure construction progresses in accordance with approved designs. He added that efforts are being intensified to complete the remaining electromechanical works within the planned timeline and bring the substation into operation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Milki Goshu, Site Engineer for Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation, confirmed that construction is progressing well and remains on track to meet the scheduled completion date while adhering to required quality standards.
Once completed, the Shigdan substation will facilitate the integration of surplus power generated by the Omo Kuraz Sugar Factory into the national grid, while also ensuring reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply to surrounding communities.
The project, valued at over 27 million US dollars, is being implemented with construction and consultancy works carried out by Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation and Byucksan Power, both based in the Republic of Korea.
