Adama Science and Technology University has announced that it is conducting research to help address challenges in ensuring reliable electricity access across Ethiopia.
Mesfin Megera, Deputy Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computing, emphasized that a reliable power supply has become a global benchmark for a country’s overall development.

He stated that, in today’s world, it is almost impossible to provide or access any service without electricity. As such, a dependable power supply is critical for expanding cities and industries, modernizing agriculture, creating job opportunities, facilitating financial services, enabling information exchange, and meeting basic public needs.
He further explained that Ethiopia is working to modernize the lives of its citizens by harnessing its natural resources and focusing on renewable energy development through a range of initiatives.
According to Mr. Mesfin, while Ethiopia has made notable progress in power generation and cross-border energy connections in recent years, challenges remain in delivering electricity access to all parts of the country.
He noted that Adama Science and Technology University, as an academic institution engaged in the power sector, previously participated in consulting work during the construction of the Adama II Wind Power Plant.
He added that the university has also been conducting research into off-grid solar energy solutions for rural communities living far from the national grid.
The university is actively researching ways to close gaps in power generation and improve energy integration. Mr. Mesfin stressed that the institution will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to implement research projects that modernize the power sector, expand electricity options, reduce energy waste, and make off-grid electricity more accessible.
Finally, the university expressed its willingness to cooperate with Ethiopian Electric Power on future research and capacity-building initiatives.
