The Green Legacy Initiative: Strengthening the Safety and Sustainability of the GERD

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has utilized 42.85 billion cubic meters of water for power generation over the past nine months, demonstrating the damโ€™s growing contribution to Ethiopiaโ€™s energy sector and regional development. ๐ŸŒŠโšก๏ธ

This represents an 84.9% achievement of the planned annual water utilization target for electricity generation.

The extensive tree-planting and watershed rehabilitation programs implemented in recent years have made a significant positive contribution to increasing water flow into the dam while also enhancing its long-term safety and sustainability.

GERD was designed with a 15 billion cubic meter dead-storage capacity specifically allocated for sediment accumulation. As a result, there is no foreseeable risk of sediment reaching the damโ€™s water intake penstocks for at least the next 50 years.

Forecasts indicate that rainfall during the upcoming rainy season is expected to be above average, with projections showing that up to 54 billion cubic meters of water could flow into the dam. This substantial inflow will play a critical role in achieving the planned electricity generation targets for the fiscal year.

Therefore, by strengthening watershed protection and expanding forest coverage across catchment areas, we can further extend the lifespan, efficiency, and sustainability of our national flagship dam.
