Ethiopia Electric Power announced that a power sale agreement will soon be signed between Ethiopia and Tanzania.

The Marketing and Business Development Department director, Ato Hiwot Eshetu, said that experts from electric supplier companies of Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania held a tripartite discussion in Nairobi.

He said that the discussion was focused on the legal framework of electricity sales, commercial and technical issues.

Ethiopia and Tanzania have been negotiating repeatedly to reach an agreement on power sales, as Ato Hiwot reminded.

The director mentioned, the agreement will only be signed after a final discussion.

According to Ato Hiwot, the power sales agreement is different from the previous agreements, in which the ongoing negotiations to supply 100 MWs of electricity to Tanzania will be completed using Kenya’s high voltage transmission line.

He said that aside from the power sales negotiations, talks between the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) and the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanisco) for a power transmission line lease agreement are in a good phase.

He mentioned that the Ethiopia-Kenya-Tanzania (EKT) Interconnection Agreement has been signed between the three countries to purchase power and leasing the transmission line.

Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco), Dr. Engineer John Mativo said on his social media page, the discussion of the three countries is an indication of the realization of the regional electricity connection.

A visit was made by experts from the three countries to Isnia’s 400 kV substation near Kenyan border.

During the visit, the managing director observed that the substation is ready for the upcoming power interconnection.

If the Ethio-Tanzania electricity agreement is concluded, the transmission of power belween Ethiopia and Tanzania will take place using Kenyan grid.
