Tekeze hydropower plant of Ethiopian Electric Power announced that the power plant produced 491.17-gigawatt hours of electricity during the nine months of the fiscal year 2016
.
Mr Tafere Moges, head of the Tekeze hydropower plant station, explained that 85.04 percent of the planned electricity generation has been achieved by producing 491.17 gigawatt hours out of the 577.60-gigawatt hours planned for the nine-month fiscal year period.
He also pointed out that, the station did not meet its production targets because the dam had accumulated excess water, leading to delays in water release, soil and rock removal, and excavation of over 700 cubic meters of the river basin for the project.
Furthermore, the unit’s performance was compromised by voltage fluctuations caused by frequent interruptions in the Mekelle line when the units were being detached.
Mr. Tafere mentioned that the station is currently generating power from two out of the four units.
He also stated that they are working on getting the remaining two units, which are undergoing maintenance, up and running in the next few months to meet the generation target for the fiscal year.
Tekeze Hydropower Station has a total capacity of 300 MW, with each of its four units capable of generating 75 MW.
