Kombolcha III 400kV Substation Project Nears Completion

Kombolcha III 400kV Substation Project Nears Completion

The Kombolcha III 400kV substation, a vital link in the Bahir Dar-Woldia-Kombolcha power transmission project, is entering its final stages of construction.
Electromechanical works supervisor Ato Haileyesus Sintayehu confirmed that the station’s infrastructure includes two 500 MVA auto-transformers (totaling 1,000 MVA) at the 400kV level and two 150 MVA power transformers (totaling 300 MVA) at the 230kV level.

The substation also incorporates twenty 33kV and two 230kV outgoing lines to support regional distribution.
The supervisor clarified that despite significant delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict in Northern Ethiopia, final electromechanical activities are now in progress.

With a total capacity of 450 MW, the substation features modern technology designed to streamline control operations and ensure maximum safety.
Once operational, the facility will provide a reliable power supply to the Awash-Woldia-Hara Gebeya railway line, the Kombolcha Industrial Park, and the surrounding communities.

Ato Haileyesus noted that while the first round of testing and commissioning is complete, preparations for the second round are underway.
However, the substation’s full grid integration remains contingent upon the completion of the Bahir Dar-Woldia-Kombolcha transmission line and the Woldia substation.
Regarding the infrastructure, Civil Works Supervisor Ato Minilik Solomon stated that nearly all civil engineering tasks have been finalized, with only switchyard gravel spreading, internal roadwork, and fencing remaining.

The supervisors also highlighted the project’s socio-economic impact, noting that it has created numerous job opportunities throughout its various construction phases.
Furthermore, EEP employees and local youth involved in the project have gained valuable technical knowledge and hands-on experience, equipping them for future energy infrastructure developments.
