Ethiopia Linking East Africa Through Renewable Energy, Says Ambassador Jemal Beker

Ethiopia is positioning itself as a regional hub for renewable energy, actively promoting integration across East Africa.

This was underscored by Ambassador Jemal Beker (PhD) during Ethiopia’s participation in the 16th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The global summit, held under the theme “Powering Humanity: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity,” is taking place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from January 11 to 12, 2026.

Delivering Ethiopia’s national statement, Ambassador Jemal noted that more than 98 percent of the country’s electricity is currently generated from renewable sources. He emphasized that Ethiopia is not only producing green energy for domestic consumption but has also become a major supplier of clean power to the East African region, thereby strengthening regional cooperation.

The Ambassador further recalled that Ethiopia made history as the first country in the world to implement a ban on the importation of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.

He explained that these initiatives clearly demonstrate Ethiopia’s success in pursuing economic growth through a carbon-neutral development pathway. He added that Ethiopia’s experience serves as a practical model for other developing countries striving for sustainable development.

Reaffirming Ethiopia’s role as a leading African voice on climate issues, Ambassador Jemal highlighted that the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference (COP32), scheduled to be hosted in Addis Ababa in 2027, will further strengthen the country’s standing in international climate diplomacy.

He noted that the conference will provide a critical platform to promote a fair energy transition for developing nations and to improve access to international climate finance.

On the sidelines of the assembly, Ambassador Jemal held several bilateral meetings with representatives of various countries and corporate leaders. The discussions focused on expanding Ethiopia’s renewable energy infrastructure and mobilizing international support to ensure the successful hosting of COP32.

As a founding member of IRENA, Ethiopia continues to work closely with the agency, which serves as an independent international body providing technical expertise and policy guidance to countries transitioning to sustainable energy systems.
