Ethiopian Electric Power Holds Forum on Strengthening Women’s Leadership and Gender Equality

The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Women and Social Affairs Directorate, in collaboration with Ethio Power Academy, organized a discussion forum focused on building gender capacity and leadership.

During the forum, Wondwosen Kassa (PhD), Director of EEP’s Ethio Power Academy, presented an assessment paper highlighting national and global strategies to enhance women’s leadership and professional capabilities within the institution.

The study emphasized that, despite women’s undeniable competence in leadership and job performance, their participation, especially in African countries, remains disproportionately low.

Wondwosen’s research revealed that while EEP has established policies and frameworks to promote women in leadership roles, current data shows their participation stands at only 18%.

He noted that societal expectations, including household responsibilities, continue to hinder women’s career advancement.

Mulat Gezahegn, Head of the CEO’s Office, stated that EEP is committed to increase women’s leadership roles in this fiscal year, with plans to implement practical measures to ensure progress.

He stressed that leadership must recognize and trust women’s ability to excel in decision-making and operational roles.

W/ro Lense Edaye, Director of EEP’s Women and Social Affairs Directorate, emphasized that achieving gender equality requires collective effort.

She called for institutional accountability, urging senior management to take proactive steps in fostering an inclusive workplace.

The forum also addressed misconceptions about women’s capabilities and highlighted the need for gender-sensitive policies, tailored training programs, and workplace environments that ensure women’s full participation.

Attendees comprising mid and senior level managers discussed actionable steps to address gender disparities, including combating negative stereotypes and implementing equitable recruitment and promotion practices.

Key recommendations from the forum will serve as a foundation for future initiatives, with a focus on integrating gender equality into corporate governance.

Participants were urged to actively advocate for women’s empowerment within their respective roles, ensuring measurable progress in EEP’s gender inclusion efforts.
