Electricity tariff in Ethiopia is not cost reflective

The CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power announced that the electricity tariff in Ethiopia is not cost reflective.

During the UK-Ethiopia Green Technology Forum hosted by the British Embassy, Engineer Ashebir Balcha, the CEO, emphasized that the tarif of electricity in Ethiopia is not based on production and eperation expenses.

He also stated that this does not encourage investors who want to invest in the energy sector and does not provide sufficient remuneration.

The CEO highlighted that the challenging aspect for the organization in the energy industry is the tariff issue.

The CEO mentioned that the organization enlisted external consultant with financial support of the World Bank to conduct a study on issues related to tariffs, production costs, and operational cost discrepancies.

Eng. Asheber stated that the study by the consulting firm will be showcased to the Ethiopian oil and energy authority as well as other relevant entities at various levels for evaluate.

The UK-Ethiopia Green Technology Forum was well-attended by numerous British private companies, consultants, and government representatives involved in the energy sector.
