EEP Hosts Workshop on Environmental, Social, and Occupational Safety Study

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has held a stakeholder workshop to review the findings of a comprehensive survey on environmental, social, and occupational health and safety (E&S and OHS) issues.

The workshop took place at the Best Western Plus Hotel in Addis Ababa, bringing together senior officials, experts, and development partners to discuss the study’s outcomes and future directions.

Opening the session, Dr. Wondwesen Kassa, Director of the Ethio Power Academy, said EEP is currently implementing a range of power infrastructure projects critical to national development. He emphasized that environmental and social safeguards remain integral to project execution.

He noted that the study will enhance the institution’s capacity to anticipate and address project-related challenges more effectively, contributing to improved performance and sustainability.

The survey, conducted over the past year, was carried out by Asian Consulting Engineers with financial support from the World Bank, according to Mr. Korsa Taressa, EEP’s Corporate Health and Safety Manager and the study’s coordinator.

Mr. Korsa said the assessment was designed to evaluate EEP’s existing capacity and identify gaps in environmental, social, and occupational health and safety practices, while also proposing strategic recommendations for improvement.

He added that the workshop aimed to validate the study’s findings and gather stakeholder input to further refine the recommendations.

Data for the study was compiled through a review of institutional documents, including policies, procedures, and reports, as well as through field observations and consultations conducted across various operational sites.

Participants in the workshop included EEP executives and professionals, representatives of the World Bank, experts from the consulting firm, officials from the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority, and other stakeholders.
