The 230 kV Arba Minch No. 2 power substation has been completed on schedule and is now fully operational, according to the Southern National Grid Expansion Project Office of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
The project’s Acting Manager, Mr. Andualem Melaku, stated that the substation forms part of the broader Southern National Grid Expansion Project and became operational following the completion of expansion works at the Wolayta Sodo No. 2 400/230 kV substation.
Constructed to enhance power supply reliability, the substation is expected to serve the planned Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Park in Arba Minch, as well as surrounding areas within a 120-kilometer radius.

The substation is equipped with six transformers with a combined capacity of 476 MVA. It also features one 132 kV, ten 33 kV, and five 15 kV outgoing feeder lines, enabling efficient distribution of electricity across the network.
Mr. Andualem noted that the project will play a significant role in expanding energy access and addressing the country’s growing electricity demand.
The facility incorporates a modern Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) control system, which enhances power flow management, allows rapid response to technical faults, and improves operational safety and reliability.
Construction of the substation was carried out by Hyosung Heavy Industries, while consulting services were provided by Byucksan Power, both based in the Republic of Korea.
Meanwhile, the Wolayta Sodo No. 2 – Arba Minch No. 2 230 kV and Arba Minch No. 2 – Arba Minch No. 2 132 kV transmission lines were recently tested and commissioned, further strengthening the operational readiness of the project.
