Ethiopian Electric Power continues to execute strategic capacity building initiatives to sustainably meet the growing energy demands of its customers and ensure grid reliability.
Key Achievements & Major Milestones:
· Substantial Power Gains: Through transformer capacity upgrades carried out over the past 5 years at 10 key substations, an additional 439 MW (or 487.3 MVA) of power has been successfully injected into the national grid.
· Upgraded Substations: The capacity expansion and mobile substation installation tasks were executed at the following strategic hubs:
Legetafo, Bole Lemi 2, Adama 2, Wolkite, Mizan, Bahir Dar, Kombolcha 2, Gefersa, Bale Robe, and Addis West.
· Technical Stability: These upgrade operations have delivered exceptional results by drastically minimizing technical faults and eliminating recurring power interruptions.
The Triumph of In-House Expertise:
What makes this massive engineering milestone unique is that it was executed entirely by EEP’s own in-house engineers and technical professionals. This achievement has:
· Saved the enterprise from substantial foreign currency expenditures.
· Provided local teams with high-level, hands-on experience to rapidly diagnose and resolve similar grid challenges independently in the future.
Current Upgrades in Progress:
Building on this momentum, a transformer capacity upgrade project is currently underway at the Bole Lemi substation, which is targeted to secure an additional 56.7 MW of power for the area. 🏗
Strategic Impact:
Expanding substation capacity serves as the backbone of the nation’s economic development by creating a highly stable and reliable power supply for expanding industrial zones and commercial enterprises.
