EEP Sees Positive Outcomes from Transport and Fuel Management Reforms

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has reported tangible results from ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing its transport and fuel management systems and reducing operational inefficiencies.

According to the Fleet Management Office, the utility is currently providing transport services along 27 major routes, with 26 of these serviced by its own fleet.

Head of the Office, Ato Wale Tamire, said that 16 of the routes are fully operated using electric vehicles, reflecting a major transition in the company’s transport operations. He noted that the shift has not only improved operational efficiency but has also resulted in annual fuel cost savings exceeding 18 million birr.

Ato Wale added that, in response to the increasing number of electric vehicles, the company is undertaking initiatives to establish charging infrastructure in Addis Ababa, Adama, Asella, and Hawassa.

He further indicated that the bid evaluation process for the procurement of 55 additional electric vehicles, intended to replace fuel-powered units, has been finalized.

In parallel, the office has introduced a technology-driven vehicle monitoring system that enhances fleet oversight, reduces unnecessary resource wastage, and improves vehicle safety.

EEP is also in the process of deploying a new motor pool management software system, known as “Go Live,” which will integrate GPS tracking data with fuel consumption monitoring to enable a more efficient and comprehensive fleet management system.
