Bringing the Project into Operation is Key to Expand the National Energy Mix

The Generation Business Unit of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has emphasized the need to complete and operationalize the Aluto Langano geothermal power project in order to expand the country’s energy mix.

A delegation of senior officials and experts, led by Deputy Chief Executive Officer Engineer Ephrem Woldekidan, conducted a field visit to the Aluto Langano Wellhead geothermal project as well as the existing Aluto geothermal power plant.

The visit aimed to assess the progress of the 5 wellhead drilling of the geothermal project and the rehabilitation works underway at the existing plant, while also providing direction for the next phase of activities.

It was noted that the visit forms part of broader reform efforts within the sector to enhance the efficiency and safety of existing power generation facilities.

Speaking during the visit, Engineer Ephrem highlighted that accelerating the completion and commissioning of the Aluto geothermal project is essential to increasing the share of geothermal energy within Ethiopia’s national Grid.

He also stressed the importance of investing in human resource development and capacity building, which are critical for the successful implementation of future geothermal energy projects.

Furthermore, he underscored the need to ensure sustainability, safety, and operational excellence across all areas of operation in order to achieve institutional goals and improve overall performance.

The Deputy CEO, accompanied by technical leaders from the geothermal and generation support teams, along with relevant stakeholders, toured both the project site and the existing Aluto geothermal power facility.
