The Arba Minch City Tourism Department has announced that the ongoing electric power substation and transmission line project will significantly revitalize the city’s tourism sector upon completion.
According to the Head of the Department, Desta Denbela, Arba Minch serves as a vital hub for tourism and conferences.
He emphasized that the completion of the new power substation will play a critical role in the sector’s growth by ensuring a reliable and steady energy supply.

The department head explained that electricity is a cornerstone infrastructure required to accelerate the operational phase of major projects, including the Gebeta LeWulid (Bounty of the Generation) initiative, as well as various other government and private tourism destinations currently under development.
Desta noted that current power supply shortages have posed challenges for the tourism sector. However, he expressed strong confidence that the project’s completion will stimulate tourism activity far beyond current levels.
He further explained that while visitors previously focused mainly on daytime attractions, improved electricity reliability will create significant opportunities for nighttime tourism and evening excursions.
Furthermore, the improved power supply will enable service providers—such as hotels and resorts—to deliver higher-quality services, thereby enhancing visitor satisfaction.
Desta concluded that by extending the duration of tourist stays, the project will ultimately help increase the revenue that both the city and the country derive from the tourism industry.
