The Central 1 Region Directorate has announced the successful completion of a capacity expansion project at the Legetafo 230 kV power substation, aimed at bolstering regional energy reliability.
According to the region director, Mr. Dereje Gezahegn, the upgrade involved the installation of an additional 125 MVA transformer.
This technical enhancement has effectively boosted the substation’s total power-loading capacity from 250 MVA to 375 MVA.
The Director emphasized that the project was primarily designed to reinforce the 132 kV transmission line connecting Legetafo, Tulefa, Debre Berhan, and Shewa Robit.

The increased capacity is expected to provide a definitive response to the rising energy demands in Legetafo, East Addis Ababa, and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the project was executed entirely by regional maintenance professionals.
This internal execution not only facilitated a significant transfer of technical knowledge but also saved more than 20 million Birr in potential outsourced costs.

Legetafo Substation Manager, Mr. Tamrat Fogi, added that the project adopted a cost-effective strategy by integrating components sourced from various other distribution centers.
He confirmed that the total expenditure for the work exceeded 7 million Birr.
In operation since 2012, the Legetafo 230 kV substation serves as a critical energy hub, featuring seven 230 kV incoming lines and a network of 22 outgoing lines across 132 kV, 33 kV, and 15 kV voltage levels.
