Ethiopian Electric Power Strengthens Cyber Defenses to Protect IT Infrastructure

The Cyber Security Department of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced a comprehensive initiative to fortify the institution’s Information Technology (IT) infrastructure against the growing threat of cyber-attacks.

Mr. Getnet Admasu, Director of the Cyber Security Department, emphasized that as the use of the internet and information technology systems expands, vulnerability to security threats has risen steadily at both national and global levels.

In response, EEP is intensifying efforts to secure all technological assets, including applications, servers, computers, and network equipment.

The Director explained that security protocols are now integrated into the entire lifecycle of the institution’s technology. This begins during the procurement phase, where hardware and software must meet strict cybersecurity requirements before purchase.

Furthermore, critical system updates such as SAP ERP implementations and software developed internally or externally undergo rigorous vulnerability assessments and compliance checks before they are put into operation.

Even after deployment, systems remain under constant surveillance. The department has implemented specialized software and monitoring systems to enhance operational security. Strict network access controls have also been established to prevent unauthorized use of the internet or internal systems.

However, Mr. Getnet noted that technology alone is insufficient. Highlighting that cybercriminals often exploit human vulnerabilities rather than just technical flaws, he stressed the importance of cultivating a cyber-conscious workforce.

“Ensuring the cybersecurity of the institution is not solely the responsibility of the department,” Mr. Getnet urged. “It requires all institutional leaders and employees to recognize their duty and work with focus.”
