The Geda Special Economic Zone 230-kilovolt Substation project, one of the projects being constructed by Ethiopian Electric Power’s Own Force Construction Department, is set to be completed by July this year, according to the project’s site manager.

Site Manager Mr. Tewodros Gashaw explained that the substation, connected by a 230-kilovolt transmission line extending from Koka-Gelan, will include 14 outgoing 33-kilovolt lines and four transformers, each with a capacity of 63 megavolt-amperes.

He mentioned that over 290 foundations for electromechanical equipment, along with the construction of transformer bases, have been completed for the installation process.

The manager stated that since the majority of civil works have been completed, if the electromechanical equipment is delivered to the site as planned, the remaining installation work will proceed according to schedule.

He added that the construction of the operators’ residential houses has been completed, and finishing works are currently underway.

Mr. Tewodros noted that the overall progress of the project has reached 48.5 percent. He further explained that a recovery plan has been developed for the remaining road construction, control room building, liquid waste disposal, and electromechanical works, with efforts underway to fully complete the project by July 2025.

The Geda Special Economic Zone Authority aims to supply 575 megavolt-amperes of power for the Smart City it is developing in multiple phases. In the first phase, the project will provide 252 megavolt-amperes of power.

The Geda Special Economic Zone Authority is covering the construction cost of the 2.6-kilometer transmission line, including the substation.
