The Ethiopian Electric Power Generation Operations sector is currently performing visual inspections and monitoring dam safety devices to protect power plants from flooding.
Mr. Elias Delash, the manager of the dam monitoring and control office, stated that the monitoring is conducted to ensure the safety of the power plants by protecting them from floods and landslides.
He noted that summer rainfall is crucial for the power plants, but excessive rain can jeopardize their safety. Therefore, close monitoring will be conducted in accordance with the company’s operational guidelines for power plants.
He stated that regular monitoring will be carried out on the dam and its components, such as spillways and control gates, to ensure they are functioning properly.
The manager emphasized that the responsibility for monitoring and controlling the dam will be shared among power plant heads, operators, on-site dam monitoring experts, and specialists dispatched from headquarters.
Mr. Elias highlighted that the monitoring and control efforts aim to achieve two goals: safeguarding downstream communities from potential flooding and ensuring the effective operation of the dams to meet power generation requirements.
Monitoring and controlling dams is conducted from the initial design phase through construction, during reservoir filling, and throughout the operational phase.
