Electricity demand is increasing as cities grow, industries expand, and new commercial and service institutions are established. To meet this growing demand with a reliable power supply, enhancing the capacity of substations and expanding their infrastructure are essential.
๐๏ธ What do substation Upgrading and Expansion works involve?
Substation upgrading and expansion involves assessing electricity demand and increasing the capacity of transformers, replacing aging or capacity-constrained equipment, adding new feeders, upgrading protection and control systems, increasing the capacity of cables and other substation equipment, and, where necessary, constructing new substations.
๐ Why are Upgrading and expansion works necessary?
As urban populations increase, new residential areas and commercial centers are developed, factories expand, and new electricity consumers are connected, the electrical load on substations also increases.
When a substation’s capacity is not upgraded to keep pace with this growth, equipment can become overloaded, increasing the risk of equipment failure and power interruptions. The World Bank has identified inadequate load planning and overloaded distribution infrastructure as factors affecting the reliability and quality of electricity supply in Ethiopia.
๐ 1. Reducing power supply constraints
Substation expansion does not create additional generation capacity. Rather, it increases the grid’s ability to deliver the electricity that has already been generated to consumers with sufficient capacity and greater reliability.
By adding transformers, feeders and other transmission and distribution equipment, the load on existing infrastructure can be better managed, power transfer capacity can be increased, and the risk of interruptions caused by overloading can be reduced. Recent projects in Ethiopia demonstrate how transformer upgrades, feeder improvements and network rehabilitation are being used to strengthen supply reliability.
๐ญ 2. Providing reliable power for industry and the urban economy
Adequate and reliable electricity is an essential input for factories, businesses, hospitals, educational institutions, technology services and other urban activities.
When substation capacity is strengthened, additional consumers can be connected and existing customers can receive a more reliable supply. This creates better conditions for industrial production, business expansion and new investment.
For example, the capacity expansion at the Legetafo 230 kV substation increased its total power-loading capacity from 250 MVA to 375 MVA, helping respond to growing electricity demand in Legetafo, East Addis Ababa and surrounding areas.
โ๏ธ 3. Expansion means preparing not only for today, but also for tomorrow
As cities continue to grow and industries expand, electricity demand will continue to increase. Therefore, substation capacity should not be planned only according to today’s demand. It must also consider projected future load growth.
Strengthening and expanding substations in advance helps create the infrastructure needed for future connections, improves system reliability and supports sustainable urban and economic development. Ethiopia’s current distribution planning also recognizes the need for long-term network expansion and modernization to respond to rising demand driven by population growth, urbanization and industrialization.
๐ช๐น Substation capacity enhancement is not simply about delivering more electricity. It means better service, greater reliability, stronger urban development and a more productive economy.
โก When the power grid expands and becomes stronger, cities grow, industries expand, and the economy moves forward.
