Substation Ready to Meet Growing Power Demand

The Jigjiga 132 kV substation is well-positioned to meet the growing electricity demand in the region, according to the station’s management.

The substation’s manager, Mr. Demlew Eshetu, stated that capacity expansion and modernization works undertaken since 2021 have significantly enhanced the reliability of power supply to Jigjiga city and its surrounding areas.

He noted that while the substation has the capacity to supply up to 60 megawatts of electricity, it is currently delivering approximately 30 megawatts to customers.

Mr. Demlew explained that the facility is fully prepared to provide reliable electricity not only to existing consumers but also to factories under construction and future investments in the area. However, he pointed out that the transmission line linking Dire Dawa and Harar is increasingly becoming a bottleneck due to capacity limitations.

He emphasized that this constraint is placing operational pressure on the substation and called for urgent intervention to address the challenges affecting the transmission line.

The substation is connected to the Harar No. 3 substation via a 132 kV incoming line and is equipped with one 132 kV outgoing line, four 33 kV feeders, and four 15 kV feeders.

Mr. Demlew also highlighted that, over the past nine months of the current fiscal year, various monitoring, inspection, and control activities have been carried out to enhance operational efficiency. Improvements have also been made to create a more conducive working environment.

He added that further efforts will continue during the remaining months of the fiscal year to strengthen the substation’s readiness and ensure reliable service delivery.

The Jigjiga substation has been supplying dependable electricity to Jigjiga and surrounding areas since 2005.
