GERD Brings Samoter 2026 Innovation Recognition to Webuild

Webuild has received the prestigious Samoter 2026 Innovation Award in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), highlighting the project’s transformative role in shaping the future of energy development in Ethiopia and across Africa.

Established in 1973, the Samoter Innovation Award is regarded as one of Europe’s most respected honors in the field of construction engineering.

The award recognizes projects that go beyond conventional engineering solutions by introducing groundbreaking innovations in energy infrastructure and industrial development.

In selecting the GERD, the award committee acknowledged the project as a global benchmark for efficiency and one of the most transformative civil engineering achievements of the modern era.

Furthermore, the committee underscored the project’s significant socioeconomic contributions. During the construction phase, the GERD created employment opportunities for more than 25,000 workers, the majority of whom were Ethiopian nationals.

Through their participation in the project, thousands of Ethiopians acquired advanced technical skills that will continue to support the country’s future industrial and infrastructure development.

Beyond electricity generation, the project also contributed to the expansion of critical social and public infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, sports facilities, and permanent road networks.

As a result, the GERD has emerged not only as a major energy project but also as a catalyst for broader socioeconomic transformation.

As Africa’s largest hydropower project and one of the world’s most ambitious engineering undertakings, the GERD has an installed generation capacity of 5,150 megawatts and is designed to double Ethiopia’s electricity production capacity.

Moreover, the project provides a stable and renewable source of clean energy equivalent to three medium-sized nuclear power plants while generating zero greenhouse gas emissions, making it a landmark achievement in Africa’s transition toward sustainable energy development.

Overall, the recognition further strengthens the GERD’s position as a symbol of Africa’s renewable energy transformation and a global benchmark for large-scale hydropower infrastructure development.
