Combating corruption and unethical practices should need a collective effort

The Ethiopian Electric Power’s anti-corruption and ethics department has issued a call to action, urging all employees to participate in the collective effort to combat corruption and unethical practices.

The department organized a two-day awareness training session within the sector, aimed at preventing corruption and ethical violations.

During his opening speech at the training, Mr. Merga Terefe, Executive Officer of the EEP ethics and Anti-Corruption Department, underscored the critical necessity of combating the harmful effects of corruption on the nation.

Ato Merga also emphasized the significance of instilling ethical values among the younger generation to deter their exposure to and engagement in corruption and unethical behaviors within the country.

The Executive Officer explained the sector’s comprehensive strategy for combating corruption, which includes prevention, ethics education, monitoring and investigations, and consultancy services.

Mr. Muluneh Gugsa, Ethics Officer of the Construction Works Corporation, underlined the extensive global occurrence of corruption, which has spurred nations to collaborate on formulating a collective convention to address this pressing issue.
He stated that the lack of clear and acceptable policies is the primary reason for the proliferation of corruption and unethical practices.

Mr. Dereje Atanafe, Manager of the Legal Counsel and Compliance Division of the institution, provided an in-depth analysis of the current impact of corruption on the energy sector and the enforcement of anti-corruption laws.

The training included a thorough examination of corruption, encompassing its definition, scope, and diverse manifestations. It also underscored the significance of professional ethics and offered practical advice on implementing effective prevention strategies.
