Operational reliability is the bedrock of industrial growth. Over the first nine months of EFY 2018, the Eastern Region I division of Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has executed a comprehensive suite of strategic interventions to ensure a sustained and high-quality power supply.
Under the leadership of Regional Director Mr. Werdi Mohammed, the region has focused on modernization, rapid emergency response, and infrastructure hardening.

Key Technical Achievements:
- Extensive Grid Inspection: Conducted rigorous inspection and maintenance on over 3,822 kilometers of high-voltage transmission lines.
- Substation Modernization: Replaced critical circuit breakers at the Harar and Dire Dawa substations to mitigate systemic risks and prevent failures.
- Rapid Emergency Response: Successfully deployed a mobile substation to resolve a circuit breaker fault at Adigala, ensuring minimal downtime while permanent repairs proceed.
- Capacity Expansion: Finalized preparations for a new 125 MVA power transformer at the Dire Dawa No. 3 substation to meet growing industrial demand.
- Renewable Integration: Successfully integrated additional clean energy via the commissioning of the Aisha II wind power plant.
Internal Resilience: Beyond hardware, we have leveraged internal capacity to reconstruct transmission towers—specifically addressing challenges like infrastructure theft along the Asbe Teferi–Afdem line—and continue to prioritize advanced technical training for our workforce.
By fortifying our eight key substations—from Awash 7 Kilo to Adigala—we are ensuring that the Eastern Region remains a dependable engine for Ethiopia’s economic journey.
