Measures are being implemented to safeguard substations from potential fire hazards

The Technical Support Bureau of Transmission and Substations Operation has announced that they are implementing measures to mitigate potential fire incidents at substations.

Mr. Netsanet Melaku, the office manager, reported that there have been several fire accidents at the substations due to various causes.

He emphasized that to proactively tackle the issue, they are actively monitoring and rectifying the root causes of accidents. Additionally, they are providing fire prevention training for employees at each station and establishing emergency fire contact numbers.

He stated that 16 firefighting vehicles have been procured to ensure prompt response to fire incidents at the stations.

The allocation of the vehicles will take into account the vulnerability of the substations and the number of substations in each region. Trained personnel from the company will be responsible for carrying out this task.

Furthermore, the manager stated that they are collaborating with the Ethiopian Electric Utility to prevent fire accidents resulting from transmission line failures.

He mentioned that to mitigate the potential risks associated with aging equipment, they are replacing items and conducting major maintenance.

According to Mr. Netsanet, they are currently strengthening the fences around the stations, cleaning the area, and marking the roads.

Additionally, he emphasized that they are establishing several guidelines to ensure a standardized and consistent approach to these procedures.
