Ethiopia has achieved a landmark milestone in its energy sector, with total installed generation capacity now reaching 𝟵,𝟳𝟲𝟬 𝗠𝗪. This growth is a fundamental driver for our industrial sector and a cornerstone for regional economic integration.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲: 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Hydropower continues to provide 96% of our energy mix, led by the 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗺 (𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗗). With a total capacity of 5,150 MW, GERD contributed an impressive 51% of total generation in the first half of EFY 2018. Key facilities like Gibe III (1,870 MW) and Beles (460 MW) further solidify this baseline.

𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: The Reppie Waste-to-Energy Plant, an African first, integrates power generation with sustainable urban waste management.

𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹: High-potential projects in Aluto Langano, Tulu Moye, and Corbetti are introducing a reliable, renewable baseload to our grid.

Our roadmap to 17,000 MW is well underway. With the Koysha Hydropower Project (1,800 MW) and the increasing involvement of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in geothermal and wind, Ethiopia is not just meeting domestic demand—we are cementing our role as the regional energy hub for East Africa.
