The graduation ceremony for 27 men and 2 women from the Gibe-3 Hydropower Plant, in partnership with Wachamo University, was held at the power plant compound.
The graduates from the power plant completed their five-year education in Electrical and Computer Engineering (Power Stream) at the university’s Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Dr. Habtamu Abebe, the president of Wachamo University, commended the graduates at the commencement ceremony.
He highlighted the university’s history of nurturing dynamic and skilled students who have contributed to solving societal challenges and enhancing overall output and efficiency since its inception.
He highlighted his role in developing educational programs that contribute to the country’s economic growth. He also pointed to the workers studying and graduating from Gibe 1, 2, and 3 power plants as a testament to this effort.
Dr. Habtamu expressed the university’s commitment to continuously monitor and support the teaching and learning processes at the Ethiopian Electric Power plants.
He noted that the graduating students successfully passed the Ministry of Education’s exit exam.
He expressed gratitude to Dr. Ashamo Eranko, the former Vice President for Academic Affairs, for his role in establishing the Power Engineering program at the university and advocating for the course to be offered at the Gibe 3 hydropower plant by the university senate.
Mr. Zakarias Tadese, the head of the Wolaita Zone Administration Office, emphasized the importance of education in shaping individuals into entrepreneurial citizens with well-developed personalities.
He highlighted that the government is prioritizing improving equal access to education and ensuring high quality. He also noted that universities play a crucial role in producing highly skilled individuals.
Wale Tamre, Manager of Administrative Affairs and Documentation at the Chief Executive Office of Ethiopian Electric Power, stated that the current graduates demonstrate that the company is successfully producing skilled professionals with the assistance of human resources and technology.
He stated that Ethiopian Electric Power engages in partnerships with several universities, focusing on education, training, research, and environmental conservation efforts.
He noted that Wachemo University has provided training and graduated employees for Gibe-1, 2, and 3 Power Plants in Power Engineering over a substantial period, and the company values its contributions. The university president awarded a gold medal and certificate to the EEP employee who achieved a score of 3.98, both within the department and across the university.
